The Revolution Continues

Our demands have not been met. The country is yet to be cleansed of its filth. Collection of pictures taken in Cairo on the 25th of January (Facebook Album) by a number of Photographers

Two new and important websites

I’ve recently come across two new and, I believe, important websites concerned with two hotly debated and discussed issues in Egypt these days: 1. Military trials for civilians. 2. The new Egyptian constitution. The websites are NoMilTrials.com and DostorMisr.com. Both are Arabic-language websites though NoMilTrials.com does have posts in English. I hope you find them [...]

“What is the Egyptian mainstream” – يعني أيه التيار الرئيسي المصري؟؟

Yesterday, I came across a video on youtube entitled “يعني أيه التيار الرئيسي المصري؟؟”. When I first saw the title, I imagined it would be something produced and executed by anti-protesters who would spin the economy and security yarns. This wasn’t because I thought that these were the views of the “Egyptian mainstream” but because [...]

Maadi Popular Committee

My popular committee in Maadi has decided to mobilize itself for continued security but also to take active part in the politics of our neighborhood. We have issued the first communique that we plan to share with all other Maadi Popular Committees. Here it is (in Arabic): اللجنه الشعبية لشوارع المعادي لجان شوارع النادي؛و الجولف؛ [...]

Abdel Nasser, Elbaradei and an idiot

A friend on facebook recently posted a link to this article (Note: Article is in Arabic and thus my response will be longer than if it had been in English since I will have to translate/para-translate certain passages that I wish to criticize) which I thought was one of the stupidest things I have ever [...]

Egypt: De-centralization par excellence!

So I discovered lately that I was gravely mistaken in accusing, or even thinking that, the Government of Egypt follows traditional centralization techniques when it comes to power, as per the unwritten laws of authoritarian governments. Why? Hossam El-Hamalawy discusses the issue of Egyptian Security Forces apprehending, incarcerating and torturing leftist activists of El-Arish (Capital [...]

Dissent in Egypt

Hussam El-Hamalawy, a friend and a “The Arabist” Contributor, has this link to a video on “street activism“. I hadn’t seen it before and found it quite interesting. What interested me most was the bit near the end. The group of young people that the Journalist/Reporter talked to were, as far as I could tell, [...]

If I was in charge…

Disclaimer: Proposed, sometimes detailed, solutions to Egypt’s problems coming your way. “Were I President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, things would be very different.” It makes me smile; the number of times I have heard the previous statement… both from myself and others. And so, in the spirit of wasting my time and working [...]

There’s no accounting for…

This may seem like a weird post as you, if you, read along so let me just warn you that all that follows is merely my twisted view of things I see. Whilst I would have normally placed this post on my “Too-sensitive-for-everyone-to-read-blog-which-I-post-on-and-is-different-from-this-blog” I’ve decided I didn’t care enough if people get annoyed or pissed [...]

To be sure, this is interesting

I don’t know the history of this author nor do I have any information regarding her knowledge of Egyptian politics or anything of the matter (possibly because I’m at work and don’t have the time to research). Her article is interesting never-the-less. I find myself in agreement with many of the points she makes.
